Strong Mathematicians show their thinking in different ways

We worked out the answer to 40 + 45.  Look at the different ways we showed our thinking. We all got the same answer!
Jack added all the 10's together and then the ones.  Great skip counting in 10's Jack!

Te Atawhai used her doubles and added 40 + 40 together.  That made 80.  Then she added on the 5.  80 + 5 = 85!
George used the equipment.  He made 45 and 40 with the place value blocks.  He added the 10's together and then the ones.
Strong mathematicians use equipment to help them explain their thinking.

Making pikelets

Making Pikelets on PhotoPeach
We had so much fun making pikelets.  There were so many ingredients to measure.  Cups, 1/2 cups, 1/4 cups, grams, tablespoons and teaspoons.  It was important to measure the ingredients out accurately. We all did a fair share of the measuring and mixing.  Mrs Jarvis cooked the pikelets while we watched.  They were so yummy to eat!.

7 Jellybeans

7 jellybeans...2 players....you can only take 1 or 2 jellybeans away at one time.,  The winner is the person who takes away the last 1 or 2 jellybeans...a great game for encouraging strategic play!

Capacity...

Cyclops

Playing cyclops is a great way to reinforce tables.  It builds a link between multiplication and division!

How much do you weigh?

We were trying to make sensible estimates about how mnay kilograms everyone weighed.
Maddie is the smallest in the group and she weighed 21 kg.  Carlos is the tallest and he weighed 40.5 kilograms.

We used this information to estimate how heasvy everyone else was.

How much do you weigh George?

Wini was a bit shorter than Carlos.  She weighed a little less than he did.  39.0 kilograms.

Year 5/6 Does the order of the factors affect the product?

True or False...the order of the groupings does not affect the answer? on PhotoPeach

We are looking for grouping to help us solve problems

Looking for groupings on PhotoPeach
How many cupcakes are on these trays?
We are learning to look for smaller groupings to help us work out larger groupings.

Year 5/6 How many people can we share 24 chocolate crackles with? Show your thinking...

Sharing 24 chocolate crackles on PhotoPeach
We worked out all the different ways you could share 24 crackles.
We are learning to show our thinking in different ways.

Year 4...adding 10's

True or False...when I add 10 to any number the ones always stay the same?

What is the value of each digit?

Good mathematicians look for patterns.
Which number changes when you add on a ten?
We used place value blocks to support our thinking.

Chocolate crackles Year 6

Sharing the mixture out into 24 parts...is that sharing it into 24th's?

24 cupcakes and 6 people to share them between.  How many will we each get?

Do you know how many kilograms you weigh?

How many grams make a kilogram?

How many 1/2 cups make 3 whole cups?

24÷6=?...6x?=24

We love all the maths in cooking...weight, temperature, fractions, division...
So much fun!

What are we learning in Year 5...

Sharing the fudge equally was another task that got us thinking....division, multiplication, fractions.
Lots of maths!!

Look at all the different ways we saw groupings of numbers to find a total.  It ddidn't matter how we grouped the dots.  We still all got the same answer.  We showed our thinking in lots of different ways.

Year 4 Week 3 -Number through time

This week we have explored how long a minute is by counting how many skips we can complete in this time.  We have also tossed a coin for 3 minutes to see how many times it lands on $ or Kiwi side.  We used tally marks to keep a count of our tosses.  We found that counting in 5's makes it easier and quicker to count how many.

We are exploring the clock.  60 minutes make 1 hour.  We discovered that that the minutes are grouped into even groups of 5.  We are making a bead clock to work out how many groups of 5 make 60.  Wini thinks we will need 12 groups of 5.  I wonder if she is right?
We investigated how the clock face is divided (equal shares) into 2 equal parts...half past
4 equal parts....quarters...quarter past and quarter to...

 Half of 12 is 6 and double 6 is 12. 6+6 = 12 Half of 60 is 30 and double 30 is 60. 30+30=60
So much nunber is needed to tell the time!
Here are our 4 equal parts - quarters.  Put them together and we will have a whole clock face!
                                                  1/4 +1/4+1/4=1/4=1 whole clock

Strong Mathematicians use numbers flexibly

Some of the Year 4 students found the anwser of how many dots by grouping  2,4,6 + 1 = 7
7+7=14
Others saw 2 groups of 3 = 6
6+1=7
7+7=14
We are learning to see groups/patterns/doubles to work out how many dots there are altogether...
What do you see?

Choral Counting- Counting and looking for patterns.

Choral counting in 2's.  What patterns can you see?

Countng down is so easy!  You just have to remember the pattern 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1,0.  Then remember if you are in the 20's, 30's, 40s', 50's...

What was our count today?

Counting in 2's again....I an see lots of 2,4,6,8...

It is easy counting one in 200's.  Just look for the patterns!

Choral counting in 3's...Look for the patterns.  What do you see when you look down the rows...9,39,69,99,129,159...what number do you think will be next?

We countied down in 100's.  Look at the big numbers we can use!

We counted across the row in 3's.  What patterns can you see?
